The Interim Management Committee (IMC) Chairman of Asante Kotoko, Nana Apinkra, has called on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, to expedite the implementation of the autonomous Ghana Premier League (GPL) policy.
Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, who are the two of the country's most successful clubs, submitted a joint proposal for football reforms to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on February 10, 2025.
Speaking at a meeting with the Sports Minister, Nana Apinkra appealed for swift action.
"I will also use the opportunity to plead with you [Minister], that you see to the autonomous league we mentioned in our proposal, help us expedite its implementation.
“It should not be the conventional way of writing press releases that after two or three months, we return to our old ways."
Apinkra also raised concerns about Value Added Tax (VAT) and other deductions affecting football clubs.
“Another major challenge is the VAT and other deductions that we go through. The entertainment industry has a flat rate of 3%, but ours is still almost 18%.
"Before you finish, other deductions take away 40% because we use national stadiums while other clubs use individual stadiums.”
The proposal comes amid concerns over the governance and competitiveness of the Ghana Premier League, following the stabbing of prominent Asante Kotoko fan "Nana Pooley" at Nsoatre.
