Following a devastating explosion at shops illegally selling mining explosives in Odumase, near Konongo, which resulted in three fatalities and multiple injuries, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene has directed authorities to clamp down on the unauthorised sale of such materials.
The directive, issued to the Minerals Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other relevant agencies, aims to prevent similar tragedies by enforcing stricter regulations on the sale and storage of explosives.
Addressing the media, Dr Amoakohene underscored the urgency of tackling illegal activities linked to mining explosives.
“I have instructed the security agencies, including the BNI, National Security, Police, and CID, to conduct thorough investigations, particularly in mining communities, to identify individuals engaging in the illegal sale of explosives. The Minerals Commission, EPA, and all relevant agencies are responsible for issuing licences to those dealing in such materials,” he stated.
The Minister further condemned the negligence that led to the incident, describing it as a result of lawlessness.
“It is unacceptable for someone to store and sell explosives in a residential area. It is a tragic situation, but I can assure you that the security agencies will conduct comprehensive investigations to rectify the issue and bring those responsible to justice,” he added.
Authorities are expected to intensify inspections and enforcement measures to prevent further occurrences, ensuring that the handling and sale of mining explosives comply with legal requirements.
