Government has unveiled plans to amend the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) Act to prioritise the purchase of locally manufactured goods, reinforcing its commitment to promoting domestic production under the 24-hour economy policy.
This legislative amendment aims to strengthen local industries, stimulate economic growth, and encourage self-reliance in Ghana’s manufacturing sector.
Addressing Parliament at the 2025 Post-Budget Workshop, Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Advisor on the 24-hour economy, explained that the initiative, known as "Go Ghana," is designed to drive national transformation by encouraging Ghanaians to actively support local businesses.
He emphasised that fostering a culture of consuming locally made products is key to sustaining industrial growth and reducing dependence on imports.
“Other components of the 24-hour economy include a programme called Go Ghana, which is essentially a mobilisation effort. Every Ghanaian who cares about their community and country will be encouraged to contribute, whether through environmental sanitation or by prioritising the purchase of made-in-Ghana goods,” Mr Tanoh stated.
He further highlighted that institutionalising this initiative would require modifications to the PPA law to provide a guaranteed offtake for local manufacturers.
Drawing inspiration from the success of Asian economies, he stressed that Ghana must prioritise its own products to achieve similar levels of industrial and economic development.
Although the policy will primarily be driven by the private sector, Mr Tanoh revealed that the government will explore minimal financial support during the mid-year budget review.
This approach, he noted, will ensure sustainable implementation while fostering a competitive local manufacturing sector.
