President John Dramani Mahama has announced the promotion of key officials within the Ghana Armed Forces, appointing a new Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, and a Chief of Staff, with the changes taking effect from 24th March 2025.
These appointments, made on the recommendation of the Armed Forces Council, mark a significant transition in military leadership as the newly promoted officers take over from their predecessors.
The appointees include Major General William Agyapong as Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing as Chief of Naval Staff, Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong as Chief of Air Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai as Chief of Staff.

In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces expressed full confidence in the newly appointed military leadership.
He emphasised the importance of their roles in safeguarding the country’s security and ensuring the operational efficiency of the Armed Forces.
President Mahama urged the new leaders to discharge their duties with unwavering patriotism and a strong sense of duty.
He highlighted the need for unity and cooperation within the military to address emerging security challenges effectively.
Furthermore, the President underscored the critical role of the Ghana Armed Forces in maintaining national stability, defending the nation’s sovereignty, and supporting peacekeeping missions across the region.
He called on the newly appointed officers to lead with integrity and uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
