Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has called for a commission of enquiry to investigate the execution of a search warrant at the residence of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.
His comments follow accusations from the Minority in Parliament that National Security operatives stole GH₵10,000 and pieces of jewelry belonging to Dr. Addison’s wife during the search. According to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the operatives unlawfully took the items, raising concerns about the integrity of the operation.
Mr Kpebu, in an interview with JoyNews' Evans Mensah, stressed the importance of transparency, stating that searches should be conducted in the presence of the occupant and properly documented.
"It should be videotaped. Security officers should use body cameras so that when allegations arise, there is clear evidence,” he argued.
He also noted that Jerry Ahmed Shaib, MP for Weija-Gbawe, claimed that the National Security Coordinator had to apologise to Dr. Addison after the search.
In light of these disputes, Mr Kpebu insisted that a formal inquiry was necessary to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
“We need a commission of enquiry to get to the bottom of this matter. If misconduct is proven, the Constitution provides that individuals can be barred from holding public office. Articles 278, 93, and 94 allow such recommendations to be made, ensuring accountability,” he said.
