The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has established an 11-member committee to oversee the transition of Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) from the double-track system to a single-track model.
The committee, under the leadership of Prof Peter Grant from the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has been tasked with assessing the current academic structure and formulating a comprehensive strategy for the transition.
Their work will focus on addressing challenges posed by the current system while ensuring a structured shift to the new model.
Members of the committee include: Prof. Godwin Awabil (University of Cape Coast), Prof. Samuel A. Atintono (PRINCOF), Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi (Deputy Director-General, Management Service, GES), Dr. Munawaru Issahaque (Deputy Director-General, Quality and Access, GES), D. W. Agbenyo (West African Examinations Council - WAEC).
The others are Dr Rosemond Wilson (West African Examinations Council - WAEC), Augustus Agyemfra (CODE), David Odjidja (CHASS), Addo Nicholas Nii Kpakpoe (COHBS) and Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah (Schools & Instructions Division, GES).
The committee will align Ghana’s academic calendar with the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) schedule used in other West African nations.
The transition to a single-track system is also expected to ease overcrowding and enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
By eliminating the double-track arrangement, the government aims to create a more stable and efficient academic environment that provides students with the best possible learning experience.
