Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced the government’s intention to introduce a new Scholarship Bill aimed at expanding the student loan scheme.
This initiative is designed to align scholarship support with Ghana’s strategic development priorities, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Addressing the newly established Ghana Tertiary Education Committee board, he explained that the bill will prioritise national needs by identifying and supporting the country’s most talented individuals in critical areas.
"I intend, guided by the present vision, to introduce a new scholarship bill in the country," he stated.
The minister also shared a recent example from President Goodluck Jonathan, who spoke during the ministerial cabinet retreat in Accra.
President Jonathan emphasised the importance of focusing scholarships on the country’s national priorities.
"If you want to emphasise training in science, mathematics, and engineering education, then train your best brains, identify them early, and support them comprehensively with this scholarship," he said.
In addition to the scholarship bill, the government is considering expanding the student loan scheme to include all disabled students, whether in public or private institutions.
"A fiscal assessment of this proposal is currently underway, and once completed, a decision will be made," the minister concluded.
