Organised labour has called on President John Dramani Mahama to exercise restraint in the ongoing process to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that the action could have far-reaching consequences for Ghana’s democratic stability.
The caution follows the suspension of the Chief Justice after a prima facie case was established in connection with at least three separate petitions calling for her removal from office.
Speaking at the 2025 May Day Celebration at Black Star Square on Thursday, May 1, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, expressed serious concerns over the development.
He also criticised the Mahama administration for failing to take firm action against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
“Mr President, organised labour is duly concerned about this development. Mr President, these petitions set the country and its democracy on a slippery slope."
"We advise Mr President that you hasten slowly and proceed cautiously on this matter. Your decision will be consequential for our democracy,” Mr Ansah stated.
