Dr Kabiru Tia-Mahama, Member of Parliament for Walewale and a Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, says he personally would have wished that the acting CEO of the Gold Board and the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi, would have been forgiven over a recent controversy that has sparked public outrage.
He made these remarks on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, 12 May, while addressing growing calls for disciplinary action against Mr Gyamfi.
Sammy Gyamfi has been widely criticised after a viral video emerged showing him handing out dollars to self-styled evangelist Nana Agradaa.
The footage has sparked concerns over ethics, transparency, and the public image of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, with party supporters and critics questioning the appropriateness of his actions.
Speaking on the issue, Dr Kabiru Mahama admitted that, on a personal level, he would have supported clemency.
“In my personal interest, I will say that he should be forgiven,” he said.
“But that is not nationalist, and that is not how we build a country that is borne out of my personal reasons.”
His comments highlight the tension between personal sympathies and the broader responsibility of political leaders to uphold public standards.
Dr Mahama further emphasised that the NDC must demonstrate its commitment to discipline, especially as it positions itself as a credible alternative government.
