The Senior Staff Association of Ghana, together with the Technical University Administrators Association and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association, has suspended its indefinite strike following the government's positive response to their demands.

The strike, which began on Wednesday, May 21, was declared in response to what the unions described as a six-month delay in implementing an agreement to improve conditions of service.

The unions accused both the current and previous governments of failing to honour the terms of the negotiated deal.

The National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association George Ansong, said the decision to strike was made after exhausting all other avenues.

“The Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUWAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG) announce, with deep regret but unwavering resolve, our decision to embark on an indefinite strike action,” Mr Ansong stated. He described the decision as “difficult but necessary,” citing “persistent inaction, neglect, and blatant failure” by the government.

In a statement issued today, May 22, by National Chairman Mr. George Ansong, the union announced the suspension of its strike, citing the government's positive response to their concerns.

“We are pleased to inform you that following our collective action and strong advocacy, the Government has responded positively to our demands,” the statement reads.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Finance has now released the long-awaited letter authorizing the implementation of the agreement, effective November 1, 2024.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has also granted clearance for immediate payment by the universities.

“Based on the Government's goodwill to act swiftly on our concerns, we announce that all our members are to resume work on Friday, 23rd May.” the unions declared.

They extended their appreciation to the Minister of Education and Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai for their efforts in facilitating the resolution.

“We also thank the media and our cherished members for your goodwill and support,” the statement concluded.
