The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has finally settled an outstanding $120,000 owed to former Black Stars head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor.
Akonnor, who led the national team for 21 months before his dismissal in 2021, had been receiving partial payments over the years.
The latest payout completes his compensation package.
According to documents intercepted by Joy Sports, Akonnor’s assistant, David Duncan, also had $40,000 paid out to him.
Their long-overdue compensation brings closure to a period in which several national team coaches and technical staff worked without being fully paid, even while representing Ghana in major international competitions.
Akonnor was sacked following a 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the second Group G match of Ghana's 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
At the time of his exit, the Black Stars were third in the group with three points from two games, trailing behind South Africa and Ethiopia.
The team eventually qualified for the World Cup under Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac, who replaced Akonnor shortly after his dismissal.
