The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered a sweeping raid on an illegal mining site at Bui Sobinso, resulting in the arrest of 24 individuals, including 14 Chinese nationals and 10 Ghanaians.
The operation, led by a high-powered police team consisting of six senior officers and 130 personnel, marks a significant step in the fight against illegal mining activities threatening Ghana’s natural reserves.

During the raid, the police retrieved four pump-action guns, three pickup trucks belonging to the Chinese suspects, and two excavators.
Authorities are also in the process of securing nine additional excavators that were abandoned at the site by fleeing illegal miners.
The site at Bui Sobinso has long been under surveillance due to its extensive degradation of the Bui enclave.
Acting on intelligence, the IGP’s team moved in swiftly as part of a broader seven-day crackdown on galamsey operations in the area.

The team also uncovered another suspected illegal mining hub and Chinese hideout near Subinso. However, the suspects reportedly fled upon getting wind of the police operation.
All arrested individuals and seized items have been transported to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters. They will be conveyed to Accra for further investigations and possible prosecution.
The Police Service says the operation continues in full force as part of its commitment to curbing illegal mining and protecting the environment.
