Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has launched a scathing attack on former President John Mahama and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of hypocrisy and policy inconsistency over the recently suspended Dumsor Levy.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, 16 June, the MP questioned the rationale behind the hasty passage and abrupt suspension of the levy.
“The nuisance Dumsor Levy has backfired!” Rev. Ntim Fordjour wrote. “Suspending it after passing it at midnight while Ghana slept speaks volumes of their incompetence.”

His remarks come in the wake of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s decision to suspend the implementation of the Energy Sector Recovery Levy, popularly referred to as the “Dumsor Levy”, which was scheduled to take effect the same day.
According to the Assin South legislator, the government’s cited justification for the suspension—fears of economic fallout from the ongoing Israel-Iran tensions—mirrors the global pressures Ghana faced during the Russia-Ukraine war, a situation he said the NDC downplayed while in opposition.
“Now they fear that the Israel-Iran feud can devastate our economy. Was the Russia-Ukraine conflict any different? Mahama and NDC hypocrisy exposed!” he added.
The levy, which was passed under a certificate of urgency to help clear debts in the energy sector, was widely criticised by the public and opposition groups as punitive.
While the government claimed it was necessary to stabilise electricity supply and prevent further power crises, critics, including Rev. Ntim Fordjour, argue that its midnight approval and sudden halt betray poor planning and a lack of genuine concern for the suffering of Ghanaians.
