Floods have caused havoc in the Dunkwa on Offin township in the Central Region after several days of rains.
The rains have caused the river Offin to burst its banks. This has affected several parts of the town and several homes have been submerged and destroyed. About 1000 people have been displaced so far.
Hassan Ishaque, a businessman and a resident in the town told Joy News on Thursday that several homes have been submerged and others have also been destroyed because they are made of mud.
He said people have lost valuable properties running into thousands of Ghana cedis and places like Accra Town, Donkor and Pokukrom have been cut off from Dunkwa.
Osei Kwame of Solar FM in Dunkwa said most towns have been cut off from Dunkwa. Three people are reported to have lost their lives so far while the injured have been referred to the Dunkwa government hospital for treatment.
He said the situation has persisted for a couple of weeks now and people can be seen carrying their belongings ready to leave the town for shelter in nearby towns like Dunkwa and Obuasi.
“The Dunkwa government hospital where the injured are treated too have been blocked by stagnant water preventing easy access. The Ghana Water Company also had one of its pumping stations submerged in water making them shut it down” he said.
He said the District Chief Executive, Peter Kofi Nsia and the Regional Disaster Coordinator has toured the affected parts to assess the extent of damage while the Catholic Relief Service is distributing relief items to the affected people who are living in temporal shelters.
