An artificial pitch in Effiakuma, in the Effiakuma Constituency, was submerged in water after hours of rainfall in Takoradi.
In a video that has since gone viral, residents, mostly children and teenagers, were seen swimming in the pitch-turned-pool while others played football in the facility.
The video was first shared on Facebook by David Tetteh Botchway, a retired footballer who teaches college football at Adiembra Secondary School, Sekondi.
Construction of the facility officially began in 2018, when Ghana Gas cut sod for the artificial pitch at a reported cost of $200,000.
Joseph Cudjoe, who was then Member of Parliament for the Effia Constituency, said that ''the reason for the plethora of recreational facilities in Effia is to use them as a vehicle through which football talents develop. These parks are where the awakening of the national teams that we want will begin. Many of such astro turfs will be built all over Effia.''
In 2020, the facility was ready and duly opened for public use.
David Tetteh, who is also the academy coach at Sedan FC, told Joy Sports that the facility has had drainage issues for some time.
''This was not the first time we have seen it flood. Usually, after a few hours of rain, the surface area gets filled with rainwater.
This time, it rained for a while so I am not surprised that the entire playing surface was submerged in water.''
While the drainage issues are well documented, last weekend's rains tested its limits as the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis experienced a rain-filled weekend.
