Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of the nation’s veterans, describing their current plight as “disheartening.”
He made the remarks in a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 16, following the inauguration of the 4th Governing Board of the Veterans Administration, Ghana (VAG).
Dr Boamah, who had earlier participated in a high-level emergency National Security Council meeting on the Bawku conflict and addressed the Sahel Peace Initiative Forum, said veterans deserve far more than they currently receive.

“Many of our gallant veterans struggle to access quality healthcare, face financial insecurity, and social isolation. It’s disheartening to see those who risked their lives for our nation struggle to afford basic necessities,” he stated.
The Minister highlighted a series of initiatives aimed at addressing these long-standing challenges, including the Mahama Cares Initiative, which will improve access to healthcare, and financial assistance programmes funded in part by proceeds from the Defence Industries Holding Company (DIHOC).

He also cited plans for post-retirement job training, social engagement programmes, and formal recognition of veterans’ service.
“Let’s work together to build a system that honours our veterans’ sacrifices,” Dr Boamah urged, calling on the public to show support by sharing his message and contributing ideas.
“Your feedback matters,” he added, emphasising the importance of collective responsibility in supporting those who once served the nation in uniform.
