Ghana Senior High School (Ghana SHS) has been given a second chance in the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) qualifiers following the withdrawal of Sakogu Senior High Technical School from the North East Regional contest.
Ghana SHS, based in Tamale, was initially set to miss out on the national championship for the first time in the school’s history after narrowly losing their Northern Region qualifier to Kalpohini SHS. Ghana SHS scored 35 points, just two points behind Kalpohini’s 37.
However, with Sakogu SHTS pulling out of the North East contest, organisers have offered the vacant slot to Ghana SHS as the highest-scoring runner-up from the previous regional contests. The decision follows the competition’s structure, which requires at least three schools per contest to ensure fair competition.
This unexpected opportunity means Ghana SHS will now compete alongside Bunkpurugu SHS and Walewale SHS in the North East Regional qualifiers. The contest is expected to be hotly contested as all schools battle for a place in the 2025 NSMQ national tournament.
The development also provides Ghana SHS with the chance to defend their Northern Zonal Championship title, which they currently hold.
With this lifeline, the Tamale-based school is determined to make the most of their second chance and reclaim their place on the national stage.
