A two-month-old baby has died after a devastating fire broke out in the La Nkwantanang area of Madina, destroying several container homes in a slum settlement.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire began after a gas explosion in one of the shops and quickly spread to adjacent containers, consuming everything in its path.
A resident, Mary Abgavetor, told Adom News that a woman who was cooking with a gas stove left the food unattended to visit a friend.
According to her, the baby was inside the room when the fire began. The mother went to fetch her bag before trying to rescue the child, but by the time she returned, the fire had engulfed the entire container.
Residents have yet to see the baby since, and sources say the mother has collapsed from shock.
Some residents also reported losing valuable items in the fire, including bags of beans and rice, as well as gallons of cooking oil.
