Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has expressed disappointment that neither President John Dramani Mahama nor Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reached out to her following the assault she suffered during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Madam Koomson said she was shocked by the silence, particularly from the Vice President, who is also a woman.
“As we speak, not even one of them has called me. I am very surprised that Vice President Naana Jane, as a woman, has not even called to check on me. I expected better ”she stated.
She noted that apart from members of her own political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), no top official from the government had contacted her.
“Not even the President or his Vice has shown concern. But today, we say we have a sitting female Vice President,” she lamented.
However, Madam Koomson acknowledged that the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, had reached out to her.
“He called and told me that they are taking the matter seriously. He said he has instructed the regional police commander to investigate thoroughly and bring those behind the attack to book,” she revealed.
She called on the Interior Minister, whom she described as her “brother”, to ensure swift action is taken to punish the perpetrators to serve as a deterrent.
“I expect Muntaka, my own brother, to ensure the right thing is done. The men who assaulted me must face justice,” she urged.
During last week’s parliamentary rerun, assailants stormed a polling station at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Odorkor, overpowered the police, and physically assaulted Madam Koomson.
Disturbing video footage from the scene showed her being pushed to the ground while she attempted to defend herself with pepper spray.
The attack has since sparked widespread condemnation, with calls for heightened security around electoral processes.
