The President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has reiterated the importance of betPawa’s locker room bonus, arguing that the initiative has come to energize players and officials in the national Women’s Premier League.
The GFA President made the remarks during this year 31st Ordinary Congress held at the Ghanaman Soccer centre of Excellence in Prampram on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
In commending the outstanding support of betPawa, Kurt Okraku said, “the locker room bonus has come to energize our WPL players. Over the years, we have had only players in the Ghana Premier League but betPawa in their own wisdom have decided to extend this strategy to our women’s league clubs. Clearly, this will push the adrenalin levels of the players and hopefully we will see enhanced performances from all our 20 clubs.”
Earlier this month, betPawa announced that they will extend their innovative locker room initiative to cover players and officials in the Women’s Premier League.
This means that the Locker Room Bonus, previously exclusive to the men’s Premier League, will, for the first time, feature in the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League when the 2025/26 season kicks off in October.
Players who are part of the matchday squad and whose team wins a game will receive a GH₵400 bonus paid directly to their mobile money wallets immediately after the match.
The Locker Room Bonus was first introduced in the Ghana Premier League during the 2022/23 season to reward players for match wins. For the 2023/24 season, the bonus amount was increased from GH¢150 to GH¢400. betPawa provides the funding for this initiative, aiming to directly reward and motivate players. The bonus is paid out quickly, even before players leave the locker room, hence the name. The extension of the bonus to the women's league aims to promote gender equity and further motivate female athletes.
The Locker Room Bonus is part of a broader partnership between betPawa and the Ghana Football Association (GFA). betPawa has invested a significant amount, approximately $380,843, in the Ghana Premier League and the Malta Guinness Women's Premier League to support this initiative.
