Spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, Kwasi Kwarteng, has argued that the country risks economic setbacks if the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) fails to present the former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, as its presidential candidate in the 2028 elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, a day after Mr Agyapong filed his nomination to contest the party’s flagbearer race, Mr Kwarteng argued that the outspoken legislator represents the best choice for the NPP and the nation.
"As a party if you dont work hard and change leadership, revive the party with new face, with a charismatic leader, a disciplined leader, a leader who has built credibility over the years, with the leader who is coming to create jobs, that new face.... and still do things in the old ways.... the outcome will be like the country is going to crash."
He added that many within the party believe there is a pressing need for renewal, insisting that the NPP should not turn to former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia again.
"In our case, we believe that we have to present a new candidate, we have to separate what the polls (recent poll by Info Global InfoAnalytics on the upcoming delegates conference of the NPP) indicate from the party.
"If we don't change him (Dr Bawumia), before we go to the general election based on the same posture, we are going to lose that election."
Instead, he maintained that Mr Agyapong is the right candidate to lead the party into the next election.
