The campaign team of former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2026 flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says that Ghana’s elections historically favour candidates who maintain consistency and return to the ballot.
According to the spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, repeated appearances at the polls are key to electoral success.
“Elections in Ghana favour consistent and repeated candidates, that’s fact and not assumptions,” he said in a statement on Friday, August 29.
He cited past examples, noting that former Presidents John Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, despite winning zero constituencies in several regions during earlier attempts, were retained by their parties and eventually secured victory.
“Both Prez Kuffour and Prez Akufo Addo were repeated by the party simply because our country’s socio-political environment favours consistency,” Mr Aboagye added.
He argued that Dr. Bawumia’s loss in the 2024 general elections strengthens his position as a frontrunner for future contests, especially against new challengers.
“Every indication points to the fact that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, losing 2024 elections also reinforces him and makes him the most likely person to win the next elections,” the statement said.
Mr Aboagye also highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s 2024 performance, noting that he garnered close to 42 per cent of the votes despite facing a challenging electoral landscape.
According to him, switching candidates now could carry unnecessary risks for the party.
“The most strategic thing to do would be to hold onto the person, work to consolidate the 41% while you tweak your strategies to attract the extra 9%,” he said.
The spokesperson stated that Dr. Bawumia is now refocusing the campaign on substantive issues rather than personal attacks, urging supporters to keep the momentum.
“Finally, Dr. Bawumia is shifting the campaigns back to the real issues away from insults and name calling. Let’s keep it up, Patriots,” he concluded.
