The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has arrested 14 individuals, including teachers, students, and invigilators, across the country for their alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The arrests were recorded at various centres, including Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, and Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS.
Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, confirmed the arrests to the media, noting that the number is expected to rise as investigations continue. He cautioned that results from the affected schools will be subjected to thorough scrutiny.
Mr. Kapi disclosed that the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi was shut down after several mobile phones were seized from candidates. Students from that centre have since been relocated to WAEC’s regional office to complete their exams under strict supervision.
He also detailed other incidents, including the arrest of two impersonators at Kasoa who were each sentenced to six months in jail, while an accomplice received an eight-month sentence.
In Kukurantumi, the proprietor of a Christian school and a teacher were arrested for creating a WhatsApp group to circulate examination questions to students.
At Abura Dunkwa, one Ebenezer Fynn was picked up for impersonation and is currently assisting with investigations.
Mr. Kapi emphasised that WAEC remains committed to safeguarding the credibility of the exams and will continue to enforce stringent measures to curb malpractice.
