The Ministry of Education has extended its warmest congratulations to the University for Development Studies (UDS) football team following their historic triumph at the 2025 World University Games in Dalian, China.
UDS emerged champions of the 2025 World University Games football tournament after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over defending champions Paulista University of Brazil.
The final, played before nearly 23,000 fans, had UDS trailing within the opening 30 seconds when Gabriel Viera capitalised on a defensive lapse and cleverly lobbed goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo to give Paulista an early lead.
Despite the setback, Ibrahim Tanko’s side quickly took control of the game. UDS dominated possession and created several openings but the final finishing led them down.
In a press statement, the Ministry lauded the UDS side for what it described as an "outstanding victory", hailing the team’s performance as a shining example of discipline, resilience, teamwork, and excellence.

The win marks the first time an African university has lifted the prestigious global trophy a landmark moment for both Ghana and the continent.
“With unity of purpose and unwavering determination, great heights can be attained,” the statement read.
“Every pass, every goal, and every sacrifice on the field reflected not only your pursuit of victory but also the spirit of Ghana and the enduring character of our people.”
The Ministry praised UDS not only for its athletic success but for the broader impact of the victory, noting that the achievement has helped elevate the image of African higher education and talent on the global stage.
By becoming the first African institution to win the University World Cup, UDS has blazed a trail for other African universities and inspired a new generation of student-athletes.
“This triumph serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to young people everywhere,” the Ministry noted, adding that the win demonstrates “hard work, perseverance, and vision can break barriers and set new standards of excellence.”
The victory has sparked celebration across Ghana, with the UDS team widely praised for flying the national flag high.
Their success has also earned commendation from key national leaders, including Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who earlier posted on social media: “This victory is a triumph for UDS and the entire nation.”
The Ministry of Education expressed its pride in UDS’s historic achievement and pledged continued support for student sports across Ghanaian universities.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Education, we celebrate this extraordinary accomplishment and commend UDS for making history for Ghana and Africa.”
