Brazil’s Ambassador to Ghana, Marina Gonçalves Madeira, has described the upcoming COP30 Climate Summit in Belém do Pará as a major milestone for both Brazil and the Global South, highlighting its significance in amplifying voices from regions most affected by climate change.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, Ambassador Gonçalves underscored Brazil’s longstanding commitment to global climate negotiations and its leadership role in advancing sustainable environmental policies.
“We have been pretty much committed to global climate negotiations, and we have built quite a history in this regime.
“So hosting a COP in Belém is a significant landmark, not only for Brazil, but I think for the Global South — in making our voices heard, and especially the voices from the Amazon, which is the most important ecosystem in the world. The Amazon is our lungs.”
According to her, the conference will not only focus on global commitments to reduce emissions but also highlight equity, inclusivity, and the participation of developing nations in climate decision-making.
The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), scheduled for November 2025, will bring together world leaders, scientists, activists, and policymakers to negotiate stronger action against global warming.
It will be the first COP hosted in the Amazon region, underscoring Brazil’s renewed climate diplomacy and its determination to balance development with environmental preservation.
