Domestic tourists continue to dominate visits to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park, accounting for 88% of total visits to the iconic national monument.
This was disclosed by the Chief Executive of the Park, Dr. Collins Nunyoname, following a short tour with the Board Members.
According to Dr. Nunyoname, as of September 2025, the Mausoleum had recorded about 280,000 visits, highlighting its potential to surpass the total visits in 2024, which stood at 333,233.
“The numbers show strong local interest in Ghana’s history and heritage. But maintaining this site at global standards is capital intensive,” Dr. Nunyoname told JoyBusiness.
Costing about $3.5 million, the mausoleum experienced a state-of-the-art facelift in 2023. The project was led by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and Creative Arts, with funding support from the World Bank.
The expenditure on the mausoleum was a portion of the larger $40 million Ghana Tourism Development Project funded by the World Bank.
In 2024, the park recorded a total of 333,233 visitors. Out of the total visitors, 297,730 were residents while 40,503 were non-residents, making it the most visited tourist site in Ghana, according to the Ghana Tourism Authority.

State of Facilities
On the state of the facilities at the park, Dr. Nunyoname, emphasised the need for consistent maintenance to preserve the dignity and appeal of the memorial, which honours Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
He cited dilapidated roofs and the malfunctioning musical fountain as some of the facilities that need urgent attention.
“When it rains heavily some parts of the park and the administration building leaks heavily.”
"On the fountain, I tell my people that it’s my ‘baby,’ because I want to see it come alive again. A lot of people are very interested in it, especially when you follow the comments on social media. For now, we have managed to get some parts working. It is still not operating at its original capacity. We understand that the issues revolve around the software. We need a software update, but it is not cheap", he informed board members who were on the tour.
Dr. Nunyoname further appealed to Corporate Ghana to partner in supporting the upkeep of the facility through sponsorships, CSR interventions, or infrastructure partnerships.
Visit by Board
Members of the board, led by Ann Sackey, the board chair reaffirmed their commitment to ensure the Mausoleum continues to serve as a beacon of national pride and a top destination for both local and international tourists.
“This initial meeting is very important. Familiarising ourselves with the operations of the park is key because this is the time we really get to understand and learn exactly what the park is about and the direction its headed.”
She further assured management of the board’s full backing, stressing that the collective aim is to unlock the full potential of the memorial park, which has seen significant renovations in recent years.
