Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has announced that the government has established a National Research Fund of GH₵50 million from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) to support research and drive evidence-based educational policies.
She made the announcement at the ADEA Triennial Education Summit, emphasising the government’s recognition of the essential role of research in educational reform.
“Government is recognising the power of research, so our government has set up a National Research Fund with a seed of GH₵50 million from the GETFUND to support research institutions and to support evidence-based educational policy,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further said that the government is focusing on strengthening Africa’s education systems and bringing finality to learning poverty by the year 2035.

The GH₵50 million research fund is expected to empower Ghanaian universities as well as research institutions to generate credible data and insights to guide national education strategies and policy-making.
She added that the step is part of the government’s commitment to improve fundamentals in education and promote result-based reforms that will yield positive outcomes.
“Through our flagship Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcome Project called GALOP, we are improving fundamental learning and promoting result-based reforms,” she said.

The Vice President also emphasised the need for African nations to rely on their own resources and expertise to find lasting solutions to the continent’s challenges.
“Africa should rely on her resources to solve her problems,” she added, calling on major investment in local talents, innovations and research capacity.
