The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has asserted that the problem of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has worsened under the current John Dramani Mahama administration compared to the period when the NPP was in government.
According to Mr Kodua, despite repeated promises by the Mahama-led government to clamp down on illegal mining, the situation on the ground shows widespread destruction of farmlands, water bodies, and forest reserves.
“Galamsey is now worse under John Mahama than it was under the NPP,” he said.
He accused the government of turning a blind eye to activities that endanger the environment and the livelihoods of rural communities.
“What we are witnessing today is a total breakdown of enforcement and accountability in the fight against illegal mining,” Mr Kodua stated.
The NPP General Secretary reaffirmed his party’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and environmental protection, noting that an NPP government would strengthen local participation and technological innovation to combat galamsey effectively.
