The Municipal Chief Executive of Buem Jasikan, Park Davies Maggigbe, has issued a warning to households to construct toilets or risk prosecution as the Assembly prepares to enforce its new gazetted sanitation bylaws.
Speaking at the World Toilet Day celebration, he emphasised that open defecation was on the rise and the municipality was gearing up to crack down on offenders.
Mr. Maggigbe explained that the bylaws now empower authorities to prosecute landlords who fail to comply, and the Assembly would intensify education campaigns to broaden sanitation coverage across the municipality.
He noted that better hygiene could curb cholera, typhoid, and other environment-related diseases.
The municipal environmental health officer, Diana Affordofe, urged residents to use the grace period to build household latrines, warning that enforcement and prosecutions would start soon.
She added that the department would also strengthen waste management efforts to safeguard water sources.
The celebration featured a lively drama by pupils, driving home the message of a cleaner, healthier environment.
