Ghana is set to revolutionise gold testing in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector with the establishment of an ISO-certified assay laboratory, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has announced.
He highlighted that many ASM traders continue to rely on outdated methods, such as water density testing, which open the sector to fraud.
“These traditional methods are a major source of rampant fraud,” Mr Gyamfi said, emphasising the need for modernisation.
The new laboratory will facilitate the adoption of X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Fire Assay techniques to enhance accuracy and reliability.
“We must safeguard the integrity of the ASM supply chain,” the GoldBod CEO stated.
Mr Gyamfi also revealed that the laboratory initiative will be complemented by training programmes for miners and traders.
“We are equipping ASMs with modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly techniques,” he noted, stressing the importance of sustainable practices.
He concluded that the laboratory will not only optimise gold recovery but also reduce environmental damage and support responsible mining across Ghana.
“This initiative ensures that ASM contributes positively to the economy while preserving our natural resources,” Mr Gyamfi added.
