Tensions briefly escalated at the Manhyia Palace on Monday as skirmishes broke out between members of the Mamprusi and Kusaasi factions shortly after the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, concluded mediation talks on the longstanding Bawku chieftaincy dispute.
The disturbance occurred at the frontage of the palace when a member of the Mamprusi delegation, who was said to be wildly jubilating, reportedly hit a vehicle belonging to the opposing faction. The incident triggered a heated exchange, quickly drawing in supporters from both sides.
Heavily armed police and military personnel stationed at the palace swiftly intervened, separating the groups and restoring calm before the situation could escalate further.
Despite the momentary clash, the atmosphere around the Manhyia Palace was largely filled with wild jubilations from both Kusaasis and Mamprusis, who had gathered in anticipation of the Asantehene’s final determination.
Supporters from both sides were seen drumming, dancing, and chanting after the mediation session ended—an indication of high expectations and relief that the process had concluded.
The Asantehene, who was tasked by President John Dramani Mahama to lead a renewed effort to resolve the decades-old conflict, is expected to formally relay the outcome of the mediation process to the President in the coming days.
