The captain of Nigeria's national team, William Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from international football.
Troost-Ekong announced the decision on Thursday, December 4, just 16 days before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite retiring from active play, Troost-Ekong will still travel with the Super Eagles to Morocco for the tournament.
However, sources say, he will play no active role, only offering his support to the team.
The center back made his debut for the Super Eagles against Chad in 2015 in an AFCON qualifier.
The highlight of his decade-long international career was when he led the Super Eagles to a second place finish at AFCON 2023 and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP).
He was also a significant contributor for Nigeria when they qualified for the 2018 World Cup.
