Parliament has given approval to the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2025, clearing the way for the institution to be officially renamed the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo.
The amendment follows sustained concerns from sections of the public, particularly traditional authorities and community leaders in the area, who argued that the existing name could be perceived as exclusionary and potentially divisive.
These concerns were formally presented to the Ministry of Education, prompting a review of the university’s naming.
Government officials say the change is aimed at promoting inclusivity and reinforcing national cohesion, while also aligning the institution with widely accepted global naming practices in higher education.
They believe a location-based name better reflects the university’s national character and shared ownership.
Located in Navrongo in the Upper East Region, the university is among Ghana’s newest public tertiary institutions.
It was established to deliver practical, technology-oriented education with a strong emphasis on applied sciences, innovation, and skills development to support national development.
The government is confident that the new name will strengthen the university’s identity as a national institution, broaden stakeholder engagement, and enhance its attractiveness to students, researchers, and development partners both within Ghana and internationally.
