The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak, has dismissed reports of a 25 per cent increase in academic fees at the University of Ghana.

He insists that the Ministry has not approved any such adjustment and is demanding urgent engagement with all relevant stakeholders.

Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, January 5, Dr Apaak said the Ministry does not support fee increases introduced either by university authorities or student leadership bodies.

He stressed that any proposed changes must be subjected to broad consultation and must not place additional financial burdens on students.

The Builsa South MP emphasised that no clearance has been granted for any upward review of fees and directed that all charges should remain unchanged.

“We do not agree with the 25% fee increment, whether by the SRC or GRASAG,” he stated.

The Deputy Minister further instructed that any amounts already paid under the new fee structure should be refunded, pending the completion of proper approval processes.

Dr Apaak also called on the University of Ghana to provide evidence that it has fully complied with directives from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) regarding fee setting.

Meanwhile, the university’s management has clarified that the reported increases for the 2025/26 academic year are largely attributable to third-party charges imposed by student leadership groups, rather than fees sanctioned by the university itself.
