Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, has urged Ghanaians and political actors to exercise restraint and compassion following the sudden death of the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure.
Speaking to the media at the Adua funeral rites held in honour of the late lawmaker, Dr Mahama said it was inappropriate for public discourse to shift towards succession at a time when the family, Parliament and the nation were still grieving.
He described the loss as sudden and deeply painful, stressing that the moment called for mourning rather than political calculations.
According to him, the rush to discuss who should replace the late MP reflects a troubling lack of empathy and risks trivialising the human cost of the loss.
Dr Mahama urged political stakeholders and the general public to pause and reflect on the values of dignity, compassion and respect for the dead.
He paid tribute to the late Mahama Naser Toure as a dedicated parliamentarian, a committed member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and a personal friend who served his constituents with distinction, noting that honouring his legacy requires restraint and sensitivity, especially in public commentary.
“It’s so early and so sudden that while we should be crying and sympathising with the family, we are already talking about who should replace him,” he said.
“As people, we should begin to show some humanity in what we do. For now, let’s dignify his memory by not talking about who should replace him. Let us use this moment to unite ourselves as a people and as a country.”
