Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has criticised the previous Akufo-Addo administration, describing the amount of money borrowed during its tenure as the highest in Ghana’s history.
Speaking at Asunafo North Constituency in the Ahafo Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said that despite the massive borrowing, little was achieved in terms of development.
He added that the Mahama-led government is committed to accountability and will ensure that anyone found to have misused public funds is made to refund the money.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia also highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s decentralisation of security agency recruitment, which he said promotes fairness and transparency.
“This year, President Mahama ensured that the recruitment process for security agencies took place in every regional capital. The money borrowed under the Akufo-Addo government is the largest amount ever in Ghana’s history, yet there is nothing to show for it. We will track down wherever the money has gone,” he said.
He further warned, “If you know you have misused some of the funds, be prepared to return it. While it is reassuring to hear that all our debts are paid, remember that when you hear this government has paid off some debts, it was the previous government that should be held accountable."
"The money from the past government could have been used for significant improvements in the country. We need to put an end to corruption, and this government is fully committed to that mission.”
