Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has suggested that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s reluctance to return to Ghana stems not from fear of the charges against him but concerns about how he might be treated by state security and the justice system.

Speaking on TV3 on Saturday, January 17, 2026, Mr Bentil noted that Ofori-Atta’s medical condition adds to his apprehension, given his recent surgeries and ongoing recovery.

“It is not about the charges he is afraid of; he is concerned about the treatment he will receive. Nobody is above the law, and Ken Ofori-Atta is no exception. But considering his health, he worries that he may not be treated fairly,” he stated.

Mr Bentil proposed that the state explore the possibility of trying Ofori-Atta in absentia, as was done in the case of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.

“If there is a legal way to proceed without his presence, then it should be pursued,” he added, suggesting this could expedite the resolution of the matter while addressing Ofori-Atta’s concerns.

He also urged the government to engage in dialogue with the former Finance Minister to facilitate his return.

“Those close to him believe Ambassador Smith’s account is accurate. Ken would like to come; he is not above the law. The question is what arrangements can be made to ensure he can return safely and participate in the legal process,” Mr Bentil said.
