An 87-year-old woman has defied age and physical challenges to take part in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary, arriving at a voting centre in the Northern Region to cast her ballot.
Accra-based TV3 reported that she was brought to the centre on a motorcycle as a pillion rider. Although she required support to walk, her determination was evident as she carefully made her way to the polling area to participate in the exercise.
Her presence symbolised the commitment of party faithful as more than 211,000 NPP delegates nationwide vote to choose a flagbearer for the December 7, 2028, presidential election.
Five aspirants are contesting the party’s top slot: Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
The January 31 contest is considered pivotal for the party, as the eventual winner will later face the yet-to-be-chosen candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the next general election.
While several opinion polls project Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a front-runner, others suggest Kennedy Ohene Agyapong could spring a surprise. Meanwhile, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Dr. Bryan Acheampong are also hoping to upset expectations as delegates decide the party’s future leadership.
Across the country, voter turnout has reflected strong interest in a race many see as one of the most consequential in the NPP’s recent history.
