The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has expressed strong confidence that any candidate emerging from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race—even one who places last—would comfortably defeat the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Saturday, January 31, at the Weija-Gbawe Cluster of Schools in Accra, Mr Shaib said he had shared this conviction with polling station representatives while interacting with delegates and security personnel at the voting centre.
“First of all, when I went around to speak to my polling station representatives, I made one thing very clear to them: the person who gets the least votes in this election is still better than anyone the NDC is putting forward. Very, very straightforward—and that is the truth,” he stated.
The Weija-Gbawe MP went on to criticise leading figures within the NDC, including the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Aketia; Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku; Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah; Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang; Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu; and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. He argued that these figures carry what he described as significant weaknesses and controversies.
Mr Shaib particularly targeted Mr Ablakwa over concerns relating to passport issuance, claiming the integrity of Ghana’s travel documents had been undermined.
“If he becomes President of the Republic of Ghana, every day he will issue passports to anybody who comes to Ghana. That is how cheap our passports have become,” he said.
