Dr Hassan Ayariga, Founder and Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), has voiced his support for the government’s proposal to rename Kotoka International Airport after the country’s capital, Accra.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, Dr Ayariga argued that most international airports around the world are named after their cities, making it easier for global travellers to identify the country.
"In many countries, for instance in Germany, the airports are named after the names of the cities..." he said.
"The airport is the gateway to Ghana, and anybody who wants to know about Ghana will hear Kotoka International Airport, and people will ask who is Kotoka? What is the history behind Kotoka? But when you mention Accra International Airport, everybody knows that Ghana's capital is Accra; it makes sense. It gives a broader perspective about our own cities than individuals, so I think the Accra International Airport is good," he explained.
Dr Ayariga noted that he also respects the idea of naming the airport after Kwame Nkrumah, in recognition of his contribution to Ghana’s development, but stressed that naming it after the city would better serve national branding and international recognition.
"I think the change is necessary, if we cannot name it after Kwame Nkrumah, then we cannot name it after anybody," he said.
On Tuesday, February 3, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga revealed that the government plans to rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport.
The announcement signals a major change to one of the country’s most recognisable national landmarks.
Mr Ayariga made this known while addressing journalists ahead of the first sitting of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament.
