The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyieso, Dr Stephen Amoah, has called for the integration of entrepreneurship into the academic curricula of Junior High Schools (JHS) and Senior High Schools (SHS) in Ghana.
He said entrepreneurship education had the potential to address the growing challenge of graduate unemployment and contribute significantly to economic development.
“Mr Speaker, entrepreneurship is the key to dealing comprehensively with graduate unemployment in Ghana,” Dr Amoah stated in a presentation on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday.
The statement was on the theme “Making Entrepreneurship Part of Ghana’s Basic and SHS Academic Curricula.”
Dr Amoah noted that the job market had become increasingly congested, leaving many young people unemployed and exposing them to social risks such as insecurity and drug abuse.
With only about 10 per cent of graduates securing employment within a year after completing school, he stressed the need for entrepreneurship education to equip the youth with the skills necessary to establish their own businesses.
“Mr Speaker, the way to go all over the world is entrepreneurship, as the private sector is the engine of global socio-economic growth,” he added.
The Nhyieso MP urged the Ministry of Education to expedite action on the inclusion of entrepreneurship in the curricula, saying it would “increase the entrepreneurship appetite of the youth to start and develop their own businesses.”
