The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has commended Mahamudu Bawumia, the newly elected flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for what he described as a sincere effort to promote unity within the party following its presidential primaries.
Mr Afenyo-Markin described Dr Bawumia’s posture after the contest as “commendable”, noting that the party must move beyond internal contestation and refocus on a shared future.
“All of us must understand that we’re one party. In all sincerity, I have seen a certain posture in Bawumia expressing his desire to work with all in the party,” he said.
He acknowledged that party supporters may still be grappling with the emotional aftermath of the primaries and called for patience and understanding.
“We need to give ourselves time to heal and align psychologically. It’s for the winner to look at the numbers,” he stated, suggesting that reconciliation requires deliberate effort from leadership.
Dr Bawumia has consistently urged party members to forgive one another and close ranks ahead of the 2028 general elections.
At the National Thanksgiving Service held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on February 15, 2026, he called on party faithful to set aside grievances arising from the campaign period and work together to reposition the NPP for the future.
Mr Afenyo-Markin made the remarks in an interview on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026.
