The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection has provided an update on a newborn baby found abandoned near Bronyibima Estate in Elmina, Central Region.
The information was contained in a press statement issued on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
The infant, believed to be only a day old, is currently receiving medical attention and is reported to be in a stable condition. Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have taken temporary custody of the child to ensure her safety.

The statement said the Ghana Police Service, working alongside the Department, is actively investigating to identify and locate the baby’s mother or any close relatives.
The Minister emphasised that the child’s welfare remains the top priority of the ministry.
The Minister commended the community members who discovered and rescued the baby, describing their prompt action as vital to saving her life.
She also appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward and help reunite the child with her family.
Highlighting the serious nature of child abandonment, the Minister urged parents or guardians facing challenges related to unplanned or crisis pregnancies to seek support through the Ministry’s social welfare services.
She reiterated that abandoning a child is a violation of their rights and assured Ghanaians that appropriate care arrangements have been made for the newborn while investigations continue.
