On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the city of Kumasi will host one of the most ambitious Sporting events in Ghana’s history, the Kumasi City Marathon.
Designed as a premier 21-kilometre half marathon, the event promises to combine sport, tourism, culture, and community development in a powerful celebration of Ghana’s spirit.
Organised by Nextwave Proevents, the marathon carries the theme “Run the Heart of Ghana.”
The initiative seeks to position Kumasi not only as Ghana’s cultural capital but also as a vibrant destination for international sporting events.
Race through heritage and modernity
The Kumasi City Marathon will take runners through some of the most iconic areas of the historic Ashanti capital, including landmarks such as Manhyia Palace, the seat of the revered Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The route will showcase Kumasi’s unique blend of rich heritage, bustling commerce, and growing modern infrastructure.
Participants will experience the energy of the Garden City while running through scenic and culturally significant routes that highlight why Kumasi remains the beating heart of Ghanaian identity.
A national event with global ambition
Beyond being a race, the Kumasi City Marathon is designed to become a flagship sporting event capable of attracting participants from across Ghana and the international running community.
Organisers are targeting tens of thousands of participants including professional athletes, amateur runners, corporate teams, students, and families.
The event will also welcome runners from across Africa and beyond, positioning Kumasi as an emerging hub on the global sports tourism calendar.
With the growing popularity of marathon events around the world, cities that host major races often experience significant boosts in tourism, hospitality, and international visibility.
The Kumasi City Marathon seeks to unlock these opportunities for the Ashanti region.
A life-changing car raffle for participants
One of the most exciting highlights of the 2026 marathon is the Kumasi City Marathon Car Raffle, which will give one lucky registered participant the chance to win a brand-new car.
Every registered runner will have the opportunity to enter the raffle during registration, adding a unique and thrilling incentive that organisers believe will attract widespread national participation.
Boosting local economy and youth engagement
Major sporting events around the world are known to stimulate local economies, and the Kumasi City Marathon is expected to do the same.
Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, vendors, and small businesses across Kumasi stand to benefit from the influx of runners, supporters, and visitors.
The marathon will also provide opportunities for young people to participate as volunteers, building valuable experience in event management, sports organisation, media, and hospitality.
Schools, universities, running clubs, and corporate institutions are expected to form teams to participate in the race, turning the event into a powerful community celebration.
Promoting health and national unity
At its core, the Kumasi City Marathon promotes a simple but powerful message: a healthier nation is a stronger nation.
In an era where lifestyle diseases are on the rise globally, encouraging physical activity through community events such as marathons is becoming increasingly important.
The organisers hope the marathon will inspire more Ghanaians to adopt active lifestyles and embrace the culture of running and fitness.
Beyond health, the event also aims to foster national unity by bringing together people from all regions, professions, and backgrounds in one shared experience.
