Ghana’s premier news analysis and current affairs programme, Newsfile, returned on Saturday with a sharp focus on three of the nation's most pressing institutional challenges: the persistent 'no-bed syndrome' in public hospitals, value for money, and transparency of government procurement.
Veteran host Samson Lardy Anyenini led a four-hour marathon discussion starting at 8:00 a.m., featuring a diverse panel of legal experts, policy analysts, and healthcare specialists.
The programme tackled the re-emerging headlines regarding patients being turned away from major referral facilities. Following recent viral reports of congestion at leading hospitals, the panel, including emergency medicine specialist Dr Joseph Bonney, dissected why the "no-bed syndrome" remains a lethal fixture of the Ghanaian healthcare system despite numerous policy interventions.
A significant portion of the broadcast was dedicated to the 'Big Push' initiatives and the controversial use of sole-sourcing in major state projects. The discussion evaluated the role of the Value for Money Office in ensuring that large-scale infrastructure spending translates into actual benefit for the taxpayer.
The panel includes:
- Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah: Vice Chair, Subsidiary Legislation Committee.
- Alhassan S. Suhuyini: MP for Tamale North and Deputy Minister for Roads & Highways.
- Kobina Ata-Bedu: Management Consultant and Procurement Specialist.
- Nana Kofi Quakyi, MPH: Country Director, Aurum Institute Ghana.
- Sulemana Braimah: Executive Director, Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA).
- Kofi Bentil: Lawyer and Senior Vice President, IMANI-Africa.
