Following a visit by Vice President Prof Jane Nana Opoku-Agyemang to the site of a collapsed school building in Accra over the weekend, it has been revealed that the structure was an abandoned GETFund project.
During an interaction at the scene with officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Vice President was informed that the three-storey building, belonging to the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School, was initiated in 2012 with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
The project, however, was abandoned following the tenure of the late former President John Atta Mills.
JoyNews’ Adobea Asare reported that the Vice President expressed dissatisfaction upon learning that the collapsed structure was a state-funded school building left incomplete.
Her tone, demeanour, and actions, according to the report, reflected deep concern, with the Vice President placing responsibility on local authorities for failing to properly supervise and maintain the project.
After the disaster on Sunday, 29 March, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak confirmed that three people had died, while 20 survivors were hospitalised.
The deceased include two women and a man; their identities are yet to be confirmed.
