A Magistrate Court at New Edubiase in the Ashanti Region has remanded two brothers over their alleged involvement in the shooting and death of a 25-year-old driver, Emmanuel Opare.

The suspects, identified as William Ansah, 57, the Assembly Member for the Suumereso Electoral Area and also the Odikro of Abankwa in the Adansi South District, and his younger brother Ebenezer Ansah, 25, have been charged in connection with the incident.

William Ansah faces charges of attempted murder and abetment of murder, while Ebenezer Ansah has been charged with murder.

Presiding Magistrate Her Worship Anastacia Karimu, Esq., remanded the two accused persons into police custody and ordered them to reappear before the court on August 4, 2026.

The court’s decision followed arguments that the matter involved serious first-degree offences beyond the jurisdiction of the Magistrate Court.

Counsel for William Ansah, Samuel Addo Otoo, Esq., told Adom News that the charges against his client are first-degree offences and explained that the court therefore declined to grant bail.

He indicated that the case would have to proceed before a higher court with the appropriate jurisdiction to handle such matters.

Meanwhile, details emerging from the case suggest that the incident occurred following a confrontation over alleged illegal mining activities at Obuobi.

It is alleged that the Assembly Member had invited illegal miners into the community, leading to tensions between residents and those involved in the mining activities.

During discussions over the mining operations, a confrontation broke out and gunshots were fired, resulting in two people sustaining injuries.

One of the victims, Emmanuel Opare, later died from injuries sustained during the incident.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing, with the accused persons expected to return to court on August 4.
