The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament's Finance Committee and Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako, has criticised the government's decision to finance secondary education through borrowing, arguing that such an approach demonstrates a lack of commitment to prioritising education.
Contributing to parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, Dr Boako said education should be funded primarily through domestic revenue rather than loans that would impose future repayment obligations on the country.
He maintained that access to quality secondary education is too important to depend on borrowed funds.
"We are looking for equitable access to education, the quality and relevance of education, strengthening secondary education systems and providing a contingency response component to enable rapid response to eligible emergencies. These components are so germane to education in this country, and for that matter if Ghana was to finance access to secondary education, I least expected that we will resort to loan to do such financing."
He questioned the message being sent to young Ghanaians, saying, "If any Ghanaian young lady or young man is listening to us today and we are telling them that we do not prioritise education such that the revenues that we generate from this country are channelled into education but rather we are going to borrow to finance secondary education, that is very sad."
Dr Boako made the remarks in Parliament while debating government financing for secondary education, urging the administration to place greater emphasis on mobilising domestic resources to sustain investments in education.
