The Minerals Commission has commissioned a GH¢28 million multipurpose sports complex at Kenyasi in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region, with the investment aimed at accelerating sports development and promoting physical health across host communities affected by the operations of the Newmont Ahafo South Mine.

The modern facility is designed to serve residents of Kenyasi No. 1, Ntotroso, and Kenyasi No. 2. and features a standard AstroTurf football pitch engineered for local league matches and multi-school tournaments, alongside a Tartan athletics track for track-and-field events.

To accommodate attendees and media, the complex incorporates a 500-capacity main spectator stand, a dedicated VIP stand, and a press box.

High-intensity floodlights have also been installed for evening fixtures, supported by standard changing rooms, washrooms, paved walkways, and dedicated car parking spaces.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Tandoh, stated that the project demonstrates the Commission’s resolve to ensure mining communities directly feel the social impact of natural resource extraction.

He stressed that the facility stands as a powerful testimony to effective collaboration between government institutions, traditional authorities, the private sector, and local communities, serving as a vital bridge between mineral wealth and community wellbeing.

Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Dr. Yussif Sulemana, highlighted that completing the inherited facility aligns with the government's reset agenda to finish ongoing state projects and protect public funds.

He disclosed that the Ministry has laid a bill before Parliament to amend existing mineral management laws, ensuring a direct chunk of mineral revenues is earmarked for improving the standard of living in host mining communities.

Ahafo Regional Minister Charity Gardiner commended the investment, pointing to the region's strong sports pedigree following its recent victory in the National Milo Soccer Championship.

She noted that the multipurpose facility will provide structured infrastructure for youth talent discovery, serving as a home ground for local Division Two, Division Three, and school teams while functioning as a primary recreational center for physical fitness.

The project was realized through the joint cooperation of the Minerals Commission, Newmont Ahafo South Mine, the Asutifi North District Assembly, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, and the paramount chiefs of Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2, and Ntotroso.
