The Madina Police have in their custody a 49-year-old businessman for possessing arms and ammunition without authority. He had in his possession a pump action gun, five new pistols in boxes, 24 pieces of cartridges and 92 pieces of nine-millimetre ammunition. The suspect, Andrew Brew Appiah, alias Reuben, was arrested at East Legon while driving a VW Touareg four-wheel drive with registration number GN 7231 Y. According to the Madina Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Paul Ayittey, on Friday, September 11, 2009, at about 3pm; the police had information that someone was in possession of illegal weapons and was threatening some people in a place around Legon. He said one of the patrol teams was quickly dispatched to the area to effect his arrest and he was traced to East Legon, where he was arrested. During a search in his vehicle the police found a pump action gun and one pistol, which were both loaded, so he was taken to his house at Nungua for a further search. Chief Supt Ayittey said four new pistols with nine-millimetre ammunition and 24 pieces of cartridges were found in his house. Upon interrogation, he told the police that the weapons were given to him by his friend by name John Bernasko, a Ghanaian resident in the Netherlands. He claimed Bernasko came down for holidays and had since left for the Netherlands, but all efforts to reach the said friend on a telephone number he provided failed. The commander said the police had launched a full-scale investigation into the case to determine the source of the guns and what the suspect had been doing or intended doing with them. He said the fight against armed robbery was on and the police would ensure that peace-loving citizens would go about their activities peacefully.
